Soybean Interest Remains Strong In SK

Along with the crop's expansion west across Manitoba, there's been growing excitement about soybean production in Saskatchewan as well.

Garry Hnatowich, research agronomist at the Canada-Saskatchewan Irrigation Development Centre in Outlook, says he's finding the level of interest in the crop among Saskatchewan farmers remains high heading into the 2014 growing season.

"I think the interest in soybeans really stems from a couple of reasons, including the dismal canola crop that we experienced in 2012," he says. "This season, the interest is maintaining, if not increasing. We have full grain bins out there of grain that is not moving and prices of other commodities falling dramatically, so a new crop has some interest in producers' minds."

Even with the earliest maturing varieties, Hnatowich says soybean production in Saskatchewan still has risks.

"(It's feasible) in those areas that border Manitoba, the southeast corner in particular. As we move north and drift west it becomes riskier and riskier, even with the best-adapted varieties that we're aware of at this time," he says.
