Alfalfa Weevils Making Appearances in Southern Saskatchewan

Alfalfa weevils are now starting to turn up in fields throughout southern Saskatchewan.

Lorne Klein, Regional Forage Specialist for the Ministry of Agriculture, says they were expecting a high number of weevils because of the mild winter and early spring, but thankfully, it hasn't played out that way.

"Overall it is low to moderate numbers but we're finding fields with heavy population. We've checked 50 fields and 10 percent have a weevil population."

Klein says producers should go out and check their fields by observing the plants very closely and look for cases where the weevils have skeletonized the leaves.
