As Field Peas Wraps Up, Soybean Seeding is Underway

Almost 90 per cent of field peas and up to 10 per cent of soybeans are in the ground, according to Manitoba Pulse and Soybean Growers (MPSG).

While there is a risk of frost this week, MPSG production specialist Kristen Podolsky says most planted soybean crops should be okay, as it hasn't been warm enough for bean crops to really emerge.

However, for the producers who decided to hold off on soybean operations until the rainy weather clears up, Podolsky says going forward, seeding depth will be important.

"I know there was some concerns with growers around the dry conditions, they were going a little deeper to see some moisture," she says, "but if we do get some rain here, I think watching that seeding depth is going to be important. Anywhere from 3/4 of an inch to 1 1/2 inch will be good."
