Canadian Federation of Agriculture Asking for Emergency Support Fund for Farmers

Canada's national farm organization is asking Ottawa for an emergency support fund for farmers during the pandemic.

Canadian Federation of Agriculture president Mary Robinson says domestic food production should be second only to healthcare as a priority. Robinson says farmers face labour shortages, volatile markets and increasing costs due to COVID 19, adding producers need government support to ensure a stable food supply in the months ahead.

"Canadian farmers need to hear a clear commitment from government to instill in them the necessary confidence for the 2020 planting season," remarks Robinson.  "Canadian farmers feel we have a responsibility to tell Canadians what is at stake.  Canadian farmers are resilient, hard working, and industrious by nature.  We are not ones to seek handouts.  We look to government only as a last resort."

"Farming families need immediate help and support to ensure our domestic food supply remains reliable and secure for Canadians coast to coast," comments Robinson

They hope the government will help to make sure that Canadians continue to have access to affordable, healthy food raised and grown in Canada.
