Deer Lake farm gets cracking on west coast egg production

A dairy farm in Deer Lake is expanding its agricultural sights, and adding an egg production facility by early 2017.

"We've been interested in all forms of livestock production, so eggs seemed to be a natural extension of that," said Pauline Duivenvoorden, who co-owns Headline Holsteins, one of the province's largest dairy operations.

Duivenvoorden said the new venture, Barn Fine Eggs, has the green light for an initial quota of 5,000 hens.

"The production per hen, once they reach 20-weeks-of-age, which is approximately when they start laying — they will lay an egg a day for the most part — so we always say," she told CBC Radio's Corner Brook Morning Show.

It's not a cheap venture: Duivenvoorden estimated it will cost upwards of $600,000 by the time it's up and running. but she isn't in it for the short haul, looking at a 15-year return on the investment.
