Early Weaning Can Be A Drought Response Strategy

The ongoing lack of moisture is forcing cattle producers to think about management alternatives even before the grazing season starts. One such possibility is early weaning spring-born calves here in 2014. Kansas State

University beef veterinarian Dr. Larry Hollis believes that producers should think pro-actively about early weaning as an option, if pastures remain under dry weather stress. His comments about early weaning as a drought response tool can be heard on today's Beef Buzz.

For producers that take this option, they are able to better control when they want their calves to head to market- and that will help them avoid the market glut of the middle of fall, when calf supplies often reach their peak and prices are often at their lows.
