Evaluating Canola Crops

Don’t rush to judgement when evaluating your Canola crop.

A number of producers who are looking at poor yields are looking at finding an alternate use for their crop like baling it for feed.

Darby Warner is the Executive Director of Insurance for Saskatchewan Crop Insurance.

He explains why when they first check a canola field for pre-harvest claims they don’t like to write it off to early.

"Canola is a crop that can respond very well to moisture, so the decision was to defer those claims for the time being. That's pretty common in hail adjusting or early season crops where we'll put the crop aside until we can decide what the potential yield for that crop would be."

He says as of last Friday they had about 200 Pre-Harvest claims in the province.

"Dry conditions are generally in the west-central part of the province. We've had some showers through there this weekend, now time is going to tell if those showers came in time to help the producers that were fortunate enough to get some rain this weekend. There's still some people who are suffering and didn't get those showers."
