Extra-Label Drug Use Revisited at World Pork Expo

The issue of extra-label drug use was a topic of discussion during the AASV members-only session at the World Pork Expo in Des Moines, IA on June 8. Dr Harry Snelson provided a review of the Animal Medicinal Drug Use Clarification Act (AMDUCA) which regulates how veterinarians can prescribe FDA-approved human and animal drugs in an extra-label manner. During his presentation, he also emphasized the additional restrictions on extra-label use of cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones. An algorithm for extra-label drug use and a description of these restrictions is available on the AASV website.
