Fire Ant Control In Pastures

Do you have problems with fire ants in your pastures?  Fire ants can cause issues with livestock and equipment in pastures and hayfields if not managed properly.  The best solution to keep fire ants under control is to apply a fire ant bait.  There are four bait products labeled to be used in pastures and hayfields.  The approved products are Amdro Pro Fire Ant Bait, Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait, Extinguish Professional Fire Ant Bait, and Esteem Ant Bait.  Be sure to read the label for all of the information to properly apply these products to pastures and hayfields.

As a way to encourage farmers to tackle their fire ant problems, UGA Extension Carroll County has set up a demonstration on a local farm’s cattle pastures.  We will evaluate the effectiveness of the fire ant bait on a treated pasture and monitor fire ant mounds on a untreated pasture.  The UGA Extension Carroll County office has recently purchased equipment especially for spreading fire ant bait.  This spreader can be mounted to a ATV or a pickup truck and will be available to use for spreading fire ant bait.

All are welcome to attend a Fire Ant Field Day on Tuesday, July 12.  Biology of the fire ant, the results of spreading bait demonstration farm, and how to use the fire ant spreader equipment will be discussed.  Henry Dorough, Alabama Extension Regional Agent, will be our key speaker at the field day.  Mr. Dorough has done extensive research in treating for fire ants in Alabama.  The program is from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Yates Farm located at 2939 Old Columbus Road in Roopville.  Cost is $5.00 per person and hot dogs and a drink will be served.
