Harper Government Creates More Export Opportunities for Canadian Wheat Producers

Ottawa, Ontario – Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada

Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and International Trade Minister Ed Fast today announced that Canadian wheat producers can now benefit from greater export opportunities in Colombia, Canada's 7th largest market for wheat.

Continuous Canadian engagement has led Colombia to ease phytosanitary import requirements for Canadian wheat, effectively putting Canada on a level playing field with other exporting countries in this important export market. Canadian wheat producers and exporters can now expand their sales into this market, benefiting Colombian consumers who will have greater access to Canada’s safe, high-quality wheat. The changes will provide enhanced access for Western wheat and new access for Eastern wheat.

Colombia is a dynamic emerging market and free trade agreement (FTA) partner for Canada with high economic growth potential. It is one of eight priority markets in Latin America and the Caribbean under the Government of Canada’s Global Markets Action Plan.
