An already weak winter wheat condition rating in the top US production state of Kansas eroded a bit further in December.
A state crop progress report on Wednesday pegged the Kansas crop at 19% good to excellent as of Jan. 1, down 2 points from the end of November when the USDA released its final weekly crop progress report for the 2022 growing season. Almost half of the Kansas crop (49%) was rated in poor to very poor condition as of Jan. 1, versus 43% at the end of November.
The bulk of the woes for Kansas wheat fields stem from dryness and drought, although the crop was also subjected to frigid conditions over the Christmas weekend with little to no protective snow cover in many areas. According to the latest US drought monitor, 57% of Kansas is now experiencing extreme to exceptional drought.
