Manitoba Pulse and Soybean Growers (MPSG) is strengthening its commitment to deliver value to pulse and soybean farmers across the province.
The association has hired three summer students focused exclusively on conducting independent research, implementing the association’s comprehensive research and production program, and engaging with industry partners, stakeholders, and farmers.
Agronomy Research Intern Geertje Doornbos will assist MPSG research and production staff with data collection and the management of small-plot research trials, including hail simulation and seeding date trials aimed at verifying or improving current crop insurance policies. She will also be helping with MPSG’s On-Farm program. Geertje is from Carman, MB.
Agronomy Engagement Intern Carlene Dmytriw will engage and inform agronomists about MPSG activities and initiatives related to research and production of soybeans and pulse crops. Carlene, who is from Minnedosa, MB, will be visiting agri-retail outlets across the province, delivering crop production tools to businesses that interact directly with farmers.
Returning from last summer, Agronomy Intern James Carriere, from LaSalle, MB, will contribute to the MPSG Research and Production program, scouting soybean and pulse crops across the province, assisting with field days, and interacting with farmers at their farms and at MPSG events.
“This summer, we’re doing more for pulse and soybean farmers than ever before. We are particularly excited about the engagement program that aims to interact directly with agronomists who play a key role in helping farmers with agronomy decisions” says Production Specialist Kristen Podolsky. “We’re an organization set on developing resources and programs to enable farmers and agronomists with profitable pulse and soybean production. And now, with the addition of Geertje, Carlene, and James, we’ll be able to deliver on the programs we’ve worked hard to create.”
