The past President of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) has been appointed to the Senate.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announcing Monday that Mary Robinson has been appointed as an independent senator for Prince Edward Island.
"Ms. Robinson’s experience in agriculture and business will bring an important perspective to the Senate, where she will be a strong voice for Atlantic Canada. I look forward to working with her to make life better for Canadians from coast to coast to coast."
The press release announcing the appointment notes Robinson is a globally recognized leader in the agricultural sector.
According to her bio she has been actively involved in agricultural sector organizations at the provincial, national, and international levels. She was a board member and the President of the PEI Federation of Agriculture, the first female President of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, and the first female Chair of the Canadian Agricultural Human Resources Council. She also served on Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s National Food Policy Advisory Council and the PEI Regional Economic Advisory Council. She is currently a member of the Board of the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity, the University of Prince Edward Island Board of Governors, and the Board of Directors of Mid Isle Farms.
Robinson is currently Vice-President of the World Farmers' Organisation and is a managing partner of the Robinson Group of Companies, a 6th-generation farm and agribusiness in Prince Edward Island.
Numerous farm groups and organizations have sent out congratulations on her appointment.
CFA President Keith Currie says Mary has consistently been a stalwart leader and advocate for Canadian agriculture.
"We are thrilled to see someone of her caliber, with extensive knowledge, expertise, and a profound understanding of agriculture, join the Senate."
