Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Associate Farm Director Carson Horn attended the 2017 Commodity Classic in San Antonio a couple weeks ago. Prior to this event though, Bayer hosted its annual AgVocacy Forum, inviting several movers and shakers from the agricultural industry to speak and participate in panel discussions designed to raise the level of conversation about many of the important issues facing the ag community. Jay Hill, a young diversified crop farmer from New Mexico, was one of the participants at the forum. He spoke to Horn after his panel discussion to defend some of the positions he has taken on several of the socio-political movements going on in the country today, affecting agriculture. “It’s time to really look at some of the hard questions,” Hill said regarding what advice he would offer policymakers as leaders in Washington prepare for talks on the upcoming Farm Bill and other legislative priorities such as action on immigration and trade. “We really need to take a hard look and spend some town hall time and we need to talk to some producers.”
As a producer operating adjacent to the Mexican border, Hill is torn between his political beliefs and the viability of his operation, feeling the pressures of the unique situation going on in the US. In some ways, Hill would like to see restrictions on Mexico, firming the border on matters of immigration as well as trade, calling the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) a “broken system.”
