PED Found In Western Manitoba

The office of Manitoba's chief veterinary officer says a small number of pigs held at a high-traffic site in western Manitoba have tested positive for porcine epidemic diarrhea virus.

Based on the symptoms and the vet's preliminary investigation, it's believed the pigs were infected with PED at the high-traffic site and not on their farm of origin.

This is the second case of PED in pigs in the province, after it was previously confirmed on a farm in southeast Manitoba in mid-February. Two positive environmental samples have also been found at high-traffic sites. None of these are believed to be linked to this latest case.

High-traffic sites include assembly yards, abattoirs, truck wash stations and livestock trailers.

As part of its investigation, provincial veterinarians will be following up with other farms and facilities that had contact with the site.

As of April 10th, 51 farm premises have tested positive for PED across Canada, including one in Manitoba, one in Prince Edward Island, one in Quebec and 48 in Ontario.

Getting closer to planting season means one thing… it’s time to get EVERYTHING ready.

Today didn’t go exactly as planned—we thought we’d be hauling potatoes again, but instead we spent the day digging equipment out of the cellar, hooking up the grain drill, and getting tractors ready to roll. With wheat planting just around the corner, every piece of equipment matters.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a normal day without a few problems… dead batteries, hydraulic issues, and a truck tire that absolutely refused to cooperate. We tried everything—jump packs, bead bazooka, ratchet straps… and eventually had to bring out the “big guns” just to get things moving again.

But that’s farm life—adapt, fix, and keep moving forward.

We’re getting close to go-time. Wheat seed is coming soon, and planting season is right around the corner
