Range Beef Cow Symposium

Mark your calendars for the Range Beef Cow Symposium that is coming soon. The Symposium will be held at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City on Dec. 3-5.

The speaker lineup for this program will provide cutting edge information for beef cattle producers. Registration is accepted through the symposium.

This will be the twenty-third time the symposium has been held. The first Range Beef Cow Symposium was held in Chadron, Neb. in 1969 and the event has been held on an every-other-year basis ever since.

It is organized by Extension Beef Cattle Specialists from the Land Grant Universities in a four state region including; South Dakota State University, Colorado State University, University of Wyoming, and University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Each university takes its turn hosting the event. SDSU is excited to host the event in 2013.

"Range Beef Cow Symposium has been popular through the years with beef cattle producers and agriculture professionals who support the beef cattle industry because of two major parts: presentations and speakers that are top notch, and a trade show with commercial displays from many segments of the industry," said Ken Olson, SDSU Extension Beef Specialist.

Fetal programming will be one focus of discussion during the symposium. According to Olson and other program organizers, this is an area of recent beef cattle research that looks at the influence of the level of nutrition to pregnant cows on the developing fetus and subsequent lifetime productivity after birth. Rick Funston, Associate Professor Animal Science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will discuss the effects on replacement heifers and Amanda Blair Associate Professor of Animal Science of SDSU will discuss the effects on progeny carcass and meat characteristics.
