Saskatchewan farmers could see significant changes in grain transportation rules in 2017.
The Commons Committee on Transport is recommending interswitching limits be extended for elevators within 160 kilometers of interchanges.
There’s also provisions for financial penalties to ensure accountability in grain exports.
The executive director of the Western Grain Elevators Association, Wade Sobkowich, says the new rail policy to be tabled next spring will shape future grain shipping business.
He says the committee has recommended important provisions to ensure accountability in rail movement of grain.
He says extended interswitching has become a valuable provision for grain shippers and needs to be permanent.
He also likes the definition of adequate and suitable to ensure the rail system focuses on market demands of customers.
The executive director of the Oilseed Processors Association, Chris Vervaet says the interswitching supports a more competitive rail transport system.
