Soybean Research Underway Across Manitoba

As Soybean harvest looms, the Manitoba Pulse Grower research trials are coming to a close.

There are currently nine research sites gathering data across the province, including four core sites in Morris, Carman, St. Adolphe and Portage. These core sites are testing all of the different season lengths including short, mid, and long-season soybeans.

"When this data is put together in fall, it's all compiled and it goes into a large database, and we can then calculate long-term averages for some of these varieties," explains Dennis Lange, Farm Production Advisor with Manitoba Agriculture, Food, and Rural Development.

Lange said the trials include both registered and experimental lines of soybeans.

"Data collected off of these sites will get used for support for registration," he said. "Some of these lines...may be available next year, some may be available in a couple years for commercial production."

The data will be released in the next few months in the Seed Manitoba publication and in a Manitoba Pulse Growers publication.

Lange notes the information will be used by growers, seed companies, and researchers.
