Strong Saskatchewan cattle prices could face some pressure this summer

A market analyst says buoyant cattle prices across Saskatchewan this winter could potentially face pressure into later stages of 2018.

Canfax manager Brian Perillat says cattle markets have been quite strong due a strong demand this winter, particularly as it pertains to the export market.

But, that doesn’t necessarily exclude cattle prices from being pressured come this summer.

“We do have a lot more cattle coming this summer, kind of our tightest supply right now and that’s helping our fed cattle market,” he said.

“To be honest, it looks pretty positive, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we move into larger numbers this summer, we’ll probably see the margins of the feeding sector under pressure.”
