Summary Of Leafhopper Activity To Date

By Houston Wilson

Almost all first brood nymphs of Virginia creeper leafhopper (VCLH) and Western grape leafhopper (WGLH) have emerged and many of these nymphs are now late instars that are close to molting into adults (i.e. second brood). As these nymphs complete their development, we expect to see increased densities of VCLH and WGLH adults in the coming weeks. These second brood adults will lay eggs higher up in the vine canopy.

This week we are providing a summary of adult, egg and nymph densities of VCLH (Fig. 1) and WGLH (Fig. 2) at each of the monitoring sites.

Releases of Anagrus daanei (the parasitoid that attacks VCLH) will resume at the end of this week.
