The Great Dairy Adventure: Learning About Milk From “Moo To You!”

By Melissa Elischer

The Great Dairy Adventure on July 23, 2014 is a fantastic opportunity to learn how milk goes from moo to you!

Have you ever wondered why the dairy case in your local supermarket is always full of fresh, wholesome dairy products? How does the milk get from the farm (moo!) to the refrigerator (you!)? Attend the Great Dairy Adventure on July 23 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Michigan State University (MSU) Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education to find out! There is no charge to attend and parking is free.

The Great Dairy Adventure allows consumers to meet the farmers who are responsible for bringing milk and other dairy products to your table every day. Attendees will have the chance to milk a cow, complete craft projects and take milk moustache “selfie” photos. There will be numerous educational stations ranging from “the miracle of milk” to a video about robotic milking (the latest in milking technology that is gaining popularity in Michigan), and seeing and smelling samples of feed that cows eat to checking out antique tractors.  MSU athletes will also be on hand to sign autographs, have their photos taken with attendees and meet with fans of all ages. And, of course, there will be delicious dairy samples, like cheese and ice cream, for everyone to enjoy!

New this year will be performances by “Jump with Jill,” the world’s only rock and roll nutritionist! Six 15-minute interactive performances, taking place between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the classroom auditorium, will highlight the importance of including dairy and exercise as part of a healthy diet.

The Great Dairy Adventure is part of Michigan’s largest annual dairy event, the Michigan Dairy Expo and 4-H Youth Dairy Days. The dairy industry and Michigan State University Extension’s five-day event brings 4-H youth from across the state together to learn about the Michigan dairy industry and compete in various educational contests, including a dairy management contest, dairy cattle judging contest and quiz bowl competition, as well as showmanship and open and youth breed shows. Youth who win the contests may earn the opportunity to represent Michigan at various national contests throughout the United States.

Plan now to bring your family and friends to the Great Dairy Adventure on July 23 at MSU to learn all about how milk goes from “Moo to You”!
