Vaccinations Key During Calving Season

We're now sitting at about the midway point of the calving season.

That from Wayne Tomlinson, extension veterinarian with Manitoba Agriculture, who notes that pure ranchers could still be calving into June.

He talked about some common issues that are coming up at this time of year.

"We're starting to think about our annual vaccination programs. For calves that are going out, it's blackleg vaccine typically. Some producers may use an injection of some of the vaccines for summer pneumonia, those types of things."

Tomlinson notes it's also key for cattle producers to focus on good nutrition for their cow herds, in order to gain back some of the weight lost through pregnancy.

He says with lots of snow, the past winter was tough for many of the animals, as they were often confined to smaller spaces.
