Wet Weather Delays Harvest And Haying Operations

The moisture in some parts of the province is delaying harvest  and haying operations.

Hay is slow to dry in the swath due to the high humidity and rain.

Daphne Cruise a Regional Crop Specialist with Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Agriculture takes a look at what’s happening.

"The second cut did happen in many areas and some producers have indicated that the second cut is probably in better shape when it comes to quality then their first cut was, so that is good news. They are going to be able to hopefully get the seed supplies they need going into the winter in these coming months," she said.

Hay quality is rated as 59% good 36% fair and 5% poor.

Provincial hay yields are1.7 tons per acre for alfalfa and alfalfa bromegrass, 1.4 tons per acre for tame and wild hay and 2.4 tons per acre for greenfeed.

So far the Kyle area hold the provincial record for cumulative rainfall receiving 537 millimetres of rain since April 1st.
