Poll Recap: Hay Soaking

Soaking a horse’s hay can be beneficial for horse with a variety of medical conditions, from recurrent airway obstruction to insulin resistance. In last week’s poll, we asked our readers if they soak their horse’s hay. More than 750 people responded, and we’ve tallied the results!
 
Of the 755 respondents, 584 (77%) said they do not soak their horses’ hay, while the remaining 171 (23%) said they soak hay for their horses.
 
Additionally, more than 190 people commented on why they do or do not soak their horses’ hay.
 
Many people explained why they don't soak their horses’ hay:
“I never saw the need, especially with concerns about bacteria growth.”
“It's not necessary for me. My horses do not have issues and the hay is not dusty.”
“It's not needed now, but maybe when he's older.”
“My horses eat alfalfa/bermuda hay and I've never had a reason to soak.”
“I have no need. I feed outdoors so there's no dust problem. It's also heavy, messy and freezes in winter!”
