Wynne Worried About Feds Move to Deregulate Food Packaging

By Amanda Brodhagen, Farms.com

Ontario Premier and Minister of Agriculture and Food, Kathleen Wynne, has vocalized her concern over the federal government’s plan to deregulate food container sizes.

Wynne said her concerns are shared with industry leaders. Groups such as the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Processors Association, the Alliance of Ontario Food Processors, and Food Processors of Canada, warn deregulating could undermine the competitiveness of food processing and packaging sectors.

The issue was first raised with federal agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz in March 2013, and again at the Agricultural Ministers meeting in July 2013. Wynne is scheduled to meet with provincial and territorial leaders Friday in Toronto.

For over two decades, Dr. Mitloehner has been at the forefront of research on how animal agriculture affects our air and our climate. With deep expertise in emissions and volatile organic compounds, his work initially focused on air quality in regions like California’s Central Valley—home to both the nation’s richest agricultural output and some of its poorest air quality.

In recent years, methane has taken center stage in climate discourse—not just scientifically, but politically. Once a topic reserved for technical discussions about manure management and feed efficiency, it has become a flashpoint in debates over sustainability, regulation, and even the legitimacy of livestock farming itself.
