Showcasing the Maverick Mentality at the Wm. A. Stewart Public Lecture

“The Maverick Mentality is leadership defined by a bias toward action.” So says Kevin Stewart, the 2017 William A. Stewart Public Lecture keynote speaker, who will share his thoughts on mavericks and disruptive thinkers at the event on Thursday, April 6, 2017.

Kevin Stewart, from AGVISION Media, has spent nearly thirty years researching the success habits of mavericks, disruptive thinkers, entrepreneurs, farmers, professional and Olympic athletes, authors and adventurists. He has compiled the traits of these disruptive thinkers and identified them as the Maverick\ Mentality. His keynote address at the William A. Stewart Public Lecture will provide inspiration and reflection on the value of change in agriculture and beyond. Kevin will be joined by a panel, who themselves can be seen as Mavericks in the field of Ontario agriculture. Panelists include: Dylan Sher, creator of Before the Plate; Teresa Van Raay, AALP alumnus; and Ann Vermeersch, current AALP Class 16 member.

A wine and cheese reception will follow the lecture, providing an opportunity to meet with Kevin and the panelists and network with Ontario’s agri-food leaders and other community leaders.

The Wm. A. Stewart Public Lecture & Reception is held every other year. The event is partially funded by the Wm. A. Stewart Endowment with proceeds from the event going to help support the Advanced Agricultural Leadership Program (AALP). Now in its 33rd year, AALP is an executive development program for men and women who want to broaden their horizons and expand their networks to help shape the future of agriculture and agri-food sector in Ontario. AALP boasts 450+ graduates and continues to offer opportunities for Ontario’s aspiring agricultural leaders.

Video: Cleaning Sheep Barns & Setting Up Chutes

Indoor sheep farming in winter at pre-lambing time requires that, at Ewetopia Farms, we need to clean out the barns and manure in order to keep the sheep pens clean, dry and fresh for the pregnant ewes to stay healthy while indoors in confinement. In today’s vlog, we put fresh bedding into all of the barns and we remove manure from the first groups of ewes due to lamb so that they are all ready for lambs being born in the next few days. Also, in preparation for lambing, we moved one of the sorting chutes to the Coveralls with the replacement ewe lambs. This allows us to do sorting and vaccines more easily with them while the barnyard is snow covered and hard to move sheep safely around in. Additionally, it frees up space for the second groups of pregnant ewes where the chute was initially.
