U.S. Dairy's climate initiatives take center stage at COP28

The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) served as a significant platform for the U.S. dairy industry, spotlighting its commitment to global climate and food security goals. Culminating on Food and Agriculture Day, December 10, the senior U.S. dairy delegation played a pivotal role in the conference, focusing on the importance of sustainable agricultural practices.

Led by a U.S. dairy farmer leader, the delegation engaged in various panels, events, and bilateral meetings with international institutions, NGOs, and country representatives. These interactions were instrumental in showcasing U.S. dairy's foundational research, on-farm pilots, and initiatives in local and regional networks. The primary aim was to highlight the sector’s efforts in accelerating emission reductions, enhancing water efficiency, and improving water quality.

USDEC Interim Chair Alex Peterson led the delegation, emphasizing the crucial role of U.S. dairy producers in climate action. He stressed the importance of understanding the realities of food production, the nutritional value of dairy products, and the need to sustain rural communities while meeting climate objectives.

Key discussions by the U.S. delegation at COP28 included:

  • Establishing partnerships for sustainable agriculture and emission reduction.

  • Ensuring farmer and rancher perspectives are considered in climate dialogues.

  • Promoting dairy as a key component of sustainable food systems.

  • Advocating for science-based international food trade to secure nutrition.

  • Strengthening collaborations across various sectors for improved climate outcomes.

This active participation in COP28 is a continuation of U.S. dairy's involvement in COP27, reflecting the industry's ongoing commitment to the global climate dialogue. With accreditation as an official observer of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, U.S. dairy is poised to maintain its engagement in these critical forums, especially as discussions around food, agriculture, and global trade gain prominence.

The U.S. dairy industry's strategy at COP28, centering around farmer leadership, is aimed at informing decision-makers about practical, supportive measures for producers and advocating against counterproductive policies. This approach underscores the U.S. dairy sector's dedication to sustainable agriculture, climate innovation, and its role in fostering a global solution for sustainable food systems.
