The Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association wants the federal government to keep the railways accountable for their performance.
The penalty to the railways for failing to meet the government’s weekly target is $100,000 per violation.
President Levi Wood says that’s a paltry amount when compared to the average weekly freight revenue earned by CN (about $184 million) and CP (about $115 million).
He says in the end farmers are left carrying the risk.
The Wheat Growers had called for the fine to be $1 million dollars per violation.
