Is US Farmland the Best Land Investment?

Report this Message
I saw this following article and thought it might lead to some good discussion....If you could start over and farm where ever you wanted....return on investment was your major objective....where you would you go and why? Thanks, B.

Is US Farmland the Best Investment. For investors interested in farmland, there are a lot of options around the globe. Investors have been recently acquiring farmland in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Africa, and Eastern Europe. Agriculture, as a whole, is developing as a strong long-term investment, but there has been an on-going debate: What is the best farmland investment in the world?

We believe that Midwestern U.S. farmland provides investors the best opportunity and risk to reward. Farmland may be acquired at a cheaper price in other regions of the world, but these opportunities may not have the same soil quality, transportation infrastructure, or government that supports property rights.

Only 7% of the Earth's land surface is suitable for cultivation, the remainder is either too hot, too cold, too salty, too steep, or too stony. Roughly 50% of the contiguous United States is suitable for cultivation according to Richard E. Lyng, former Secretary of Agriculture.

To understand why U.S. farmland is the best investment, you must analyze these following factors:

· Soil Content

· Growing Season

· Infrastructure

· Property Rights

· Government Support

I would still stick with the U.S. It has the best farmland in the world, the best access to capital, the best government support, and the best infrastructure.

If Tom Brady was your quarterback, you wouldn't fire him to obtain a rookie who was cheaper.

I have spent a considerable amount of time looking at other opportunities in South America and Eastern Europe, and none of them compare to the opportunities available in the U.S.

Plus you would have to live there...

The US definitely has the best farmland. Where else in the world can you find real estate where the vacancy rate is zero percent? No where. The same website had another great article about investing in farmland. See below:

I am the owner of 161+ acres ( Lake County, INDIANA 46341 USA ) which has been in the family for 150 years. Due to my husbands current battle with cancer (for the third time), we must part with our property, and sell to a reputable and qualified buyer.

It is his dream to see this land be put to use in some way that does not destroy our world, but instead makes it better.

I greatly appreciate you taking the time to read this and please help us to find US/International/1031Exchange Investors who would consider expending their operation on our land. If you have any questions or need more information please feel free to contact me.

Best regards,
Maria Gibbs

I ran across this article (link below) which I thought to be quite interesting. It mentions that Paraguay, Chile, and Uraguay are the cheapest places for farm land. 5,000 acres for $300,000?! Wow! And the cost of living is less expensive. I am definitely going to look in to it and possibly visit in the near future!
