Simon Fraser Tolmie grew up on a farm in British Columbia before becoming minister of agriculture. He managed the ag portfolio twice under Prime Minister Arthur Meighen. Tolmie’s tenure spanned from 1919 to 1926.

Under his watch as ag minister in 1920, a federal and provincial agreement established that grading dairy products for export fell under federal jurisdiction, but products for home consumption were a provincial issue.
