French artist Jean-Francois Millet painted Prayer for the Potato Crop in 1857. He based the piece on the famine that affected Europe from 1845 to 1850.

The painting depicts two farmers bowing in a field over a basket of potatoes to say the Angelus. This prayer, when paired with the ringing of a church bell, marked the end of a day’s work.
