Ray Kinsella is a farmer from Iowa. While standing in his corn field he hears the phrase "If you build it, he will come." With the support of his wife Annie, he decides to build a baseball diamond in the middle of his field. Once the field is completed, ghosts of baseball's past including "Shoeless" Joe Jackson emerge to play on his field.
