USDA initiative protects 335,000 acres

The USDA’s Forest Service, funded by President’s Inflation Reduction Act, announces a $265 million initiative to conserve private forestlands across America. This strategic investment will protect nearly 335,000 acres of forests, crucial for their ecological and economic significance.

This year, the Forest Service has allocated nearly $420 million to safeguard over 500,000 acres, demonstrating an unprecedented commitment to forest conservation. These projects support rural economies by maintaining forest integrity for industries and recreation.

Highlighted projects, such as the Sunfish Creek Project in Ohio and the Stimson Timberland Legacy Project in Washington, focus on conserving working forests vital for local economies and ecological health.

These efforts align with the Justice40 Initiative, prioritizing benefits for disadvantaged communities heavily impacted by environmental challenges.

The Forest Legacy Program has successfully conserved over 3.1 million acres since its inception, emphasizing the importance of maintaining forestlands for their ability to sequester carbon and support biodiversity.

This initiative not only preserves the landscape but also ensures the continuation of benefits derived from these lands, promoting a resilient and sustainable environment for future generations.
