Before becoming the 33rd President, Truman gave up his $100 monthly salary to work on the family farm in Independence, Mo. His daily responsibilities included feeding livestock, milking cows and helping in the kitchen.
Part of the farm is preserved at the Harry S. Truman National Historic Site.
