AGCO Highlights ArrowTube for More Uniform Crop Emergence

Designed to optimize seed placement, ArrowTube aligns seeds for improved emergence consistency and more efficient early-season crop growth.

AGCO is highlighting ArrowTube, a precision planting technology developed by PTx, as another step toward improving seed placement and crop emergence. The technology focuses on how each seed is positioned as it enters the soil, addressing seed orientation in addition to other planting functions that have already been automated.

During a video chat with Farms.com Managing Editor Paul Nolan, AGCO President and CEO Eric P. Hansotia explained that ArrowTube is designed to place seeds in a more consistent orientation. The technology aims to position the seed with its root end facing downward, helping the developing root move into the soil without having to make a significant directional adjustment.

"ArrowTube was developed by PTx, and it's unbelievable," Hansotia said enthusiastically. "It's so incredible."

Uniform emergence is an important objective for growers because differences in when plants emerge can affect their ability to compete and produce grain. Even a small delay between neighboring plants can influence crop development and ultimately reduce the productivity of later-emerging plants.

ArrowTube also addresses the orientation of the seed embryo. According to Hansotia, the technology positions the embryo across the direction of the planting row. This orientation is intended to help the plant's leaves develop toward the open space between rows rather than being positioned directly toward neighboring plants.

Leaf orientation can be important because leaves serve as the plant's primary mechanism for capturing sunlight. Through photosynthesis, plants convert solar energy into biological processes that support growth and grain production. Improving access to sunlight may therefore contribute to more efficient crop development.

The ArrowTube concept builds on AGCO's broader focus on precision agriculture and automated planting systems. Rather than requiring an entirely new planting system, the component is designed to integrate with existing Precision Planting modules, allowing growers with compatible equipment to replace the conventional seed tube with the ArrowTube system.

Hansotia said farmers who have tested the technology have responded positively to the changes they observed during their first season of use. The technology represents an effort to improve planting accuracy at a highly specific stage of crop production: the moment the seed enters the soil.

As precision planting continues to evolve, technologies such as ArrowTube demonstrate how manufacturers are addressing increasingly detailed aspects of seed placement. By focusing on orientation, emergence consistency and access to sunlight, the system is designed to help growers establish crops more uniformly from the beginning of the growing season.
