Research trials boost potato farming while helping local food banks

A recent potato research initiative demonstrates how agricultural innovation can support both farming operations and local communities in Alberta.

The Farming Smarter project focuses on potato variety and fertility trials designed to improve potato production. Researchers study different potato varieties and production methods to identify practices that can help farmers achieve better yields and stronger crop performance. The information collected from these trials provides valuable insights that growers can use to make informed decisions on their farms.

Beyond its contribution to farming, the research project also delivers meaningful social benefits. After researchers collect and process the necessary data, the harvested potatoes are donated to local food assistance programs, ensuring the crop continues to serve an important purpose after the research phase is complete.

Over the past several years, potato trials have generated 28,000 lbs. of potatoes which turned into substantial donations for families in need through the Interfaith Food Bank.

What does the Farming Smarter Research do?

The research is particularly important for potato-producing regions where farmers need reliable local Alberta information. By conducting field trials in the area, researchers can develop recommendations based on regional growing conditions rather than relying entirely on data from other locations. This helps producers better understand which potato varieties and management practices are most suitable for their operations.

One of the key goals of the project is to strengthen the potato industry by identifying high-performing varieties and effective fertility strategies. Improved production practices can help farmers increase efficiency, enhance crop quality, and remain competitive in the marketplace. These benefits support the long-term growth and sustainability of the agricultural sector.

But, the success of potato foodbank contributions demonstrates that agriculture can deliver benefits far beyond crop production. By combining scientific research with community support efforts, agricultural organizations can contribute to economic development, food security, and social well-being. These programs showcase how innovation and community service can work together to create lasting positive impacts.
