Smart AI tools improve cattle health feeding and farm efficiency

Beef cattle Artificial Iintelligence (AI) is changing how farmers manage livestock by using smart technology and data. This system collects information from sensors, cameras, and farm equipment to help farmers make better decisions.

Important technologies include real time sensors that track animal health, computer vision that monitors behavior, and predictive tools that detect disease risks. These systems also collect data on feed intake and animal growth.

One major benefit of AI is better animal health. The system observes eating habits and movement patterns. If something changes, farmers are alerted early. This helps prevent serious illness and improves overall herd care.

AI also helps farmers use feed more efficiently. By studying how animals grow and convert feed, farmers can adjust diets. This reduces waste and lowers costs while supporting healthy growth. Water usage and grazing patterns can also be managed better using AI data.

Breeding is another area improved by AI. Farmers can analyze genetic data to select strong animals with good growth rates and reproduction performance. This leads to stronger and more productive herds over time.

However, adopting AI systems can be challenging. Equipment and software can be expensive, and farms need good internet access. Farmers must also learn how to use and understand AI tools correctly.

In the future, AI systems may combine health, feeding, and breeding data into one platform. This will help farmers manage farms more accurately and sustainably while meeting market demands.

Identifying challenges in swine production and turning them into solutions through research and team development is the focus of this episode. Dr. Christine Mainquist-Whigham of Pillen Family Farms and DNA Genetics shares insights on herd health, biosecurity and trial work to improve pig performance. She also discusses her team’s research philosophy, how they evaluate rate of investment and how they gather feedback from employees to address challenges and maintain herd health across all phases of production. Dr. Carlos Roudergue of Country View Family Farms discusses the growing complexity of swine production, especially as technology increases and employee interaction decreases. He also shares how their workforce is shifting toward more specialized roles to support herd health and efficiency.
