Canada responds to New Zealand dairy TRQ challenge

The Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development, and the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, released a statement addressing New Zealand’s continued challenge to Canada’s dairy tariff rate quota (TRQ) policies under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

"Canada is very disappointed that New Zealand has decided to continue to challenge Canada’s dairy TRQ system. We have been through this before and have consistently and successfully defended our dairy sector and supply management from trade challenges under CUSMA and the CPTPP."

The Canadian government remains committed to protecting its supply management system and defending its dairy industry, which is vital to the country’s farmers, workers, and communities.

"New Zealand continues to be an important, like-minded partner for Canada and we will engage in the process in good faith. We are confident that Canada’s new policies fulfill Canada’s obligation to eliminate the non-conformity identified by the panel."
