New weather alerts deliver faster and more precise storm warnings
Environment and Climate Change Canada has introduced important improvements to its severe thunderstorm and tornado warning system. The changes are designed to provide people with more accurate and timely information during dangerous weather conditions, the changes could be particularly useful for farmers and people living in rural communities.
One of the key updates is the use of targeted warning areas known as polygons. Instead of issuing alerts for large forecast regions, meteorologists can now draw specific shapes around locations expected to experience the greatest impacts. This helps ensure that warnings reach the people most at risk while reducing unnecessary alerts for others.
The Department has also introduced semi-automated text generation technology. This new tool allows weather warnings to be created in both English and French at the same time, enabling alerts to be issued more quickly when severe weather develops.
Another improvement allows multiple warning polygons to exist in the same location simultaneously. This gives forecasters greater flexibility to track different storm threats, including tornadoes, damaging winds, hail, lightning, and heavy rainfall. It also helps provide more relevant safety information to affected communities.

Improvements to our alerting system help ensure people in Canada get the weather safety information they need, when they need it. Environment and Climate Change Canada is continuously working to improve services to Canadians to keep them safe from hazardous weather,” said Julie Dabrusin, Minister of the Environment, Climate Change and Nature.
The new system applies only to severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings. Other weather alerts, such as heat warnings and weather watches, will continue to follow existing alert zones.
Officials expect the upgrades to reduce the number of mobile alerts sent through the Alert Ready system while improving the accuracy of weather notifications. Canadians are encouraged to read all alerts carefully and follow the safety guidance provided.
