Young leaders invited to shape future of agriculture policy in Canada

The Government of Canada has opened applications for the fourth cohort of the Canadian Agricultural Youth Council. This program allows young people to take part in important discussions that shape the future of the agriculture and agri-food sector.

The application period will remain open for five weeks. Youth across the country who are involved in agriculture, food systems, or related industries are encouraged to apply. The council welcomes individuals between the ages of 18 and 30 who are working, studying, or contributing to the sector in different ways.

"Youth are critical to developing the future of Canada's agriculture and agri-food sector. With today's announcement, I am calling for committed and thoughtful young people with a passion for agriculture to apply for membership on our Canadian Agricultural Youth Council," said Heath MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.

“Together, we can empower the next generation to shape a more resilient, innovative, and sustainable agriculture and agri-food sector," said MacDonald.

The Youth Council plays an important role in advising the government on key issues. These include attracting young people to agriculture, using technology for improvement, and responding to global food challenges. Members share their ideas and experiences to help build better policies and strengthen the industry.

The program highlights the importance of youth involvement. Young Canadians bring fresh thinking, energy, and innovative ideas. Their participation helps ensure that the agriculture sector continues to grow in a sustainable and modern way.

The council has already shown strong results through its previous cohorts. It was first launched in 2020 and received a large number of applications, showing high interest among youth. Members are selected from different regions and sectors to create a balanced and diverse group.

The new cohort will begin its two-year term in the fall of 2026. Members will work alongside returning participants and government representatives. The goal is to include up to 25 young leaders who can contribute to meaningful discussions and solutions.

"The Canadian Agricultural Youth Council gave me a rare platform to exchange ideas with passionate young leaders from across Canada and beyond, deepening my understanding of the issues and opportunities shaping the future of food and farming," said William McManiman, Co-Chair, Canadian Agricultural Youth Council.

“Its diversity of voices from all regions of the country and including Indigenous voices, encapsulating producers, students, advisors, technicians and scientists, created an inspiring environment where complex challenges became powerful moments of collaboration," said McManiman.

“I encourage all curious and committed young people to apply for the Youth Council and help build a more innovative, sustainable, and inclusive sector," said McManiman.

Applications require candidates to share their experience, motivation, and ideas for improving agriculture. This process helps select individuals who are passionate about the future of the industry.

This initiative continues to support leadership development and encourages youth to play an active role in shaping the future of Canadian agriculture.
