Innovators developing technologies in productivity, sustainability, automation, food processing, and resource efficiency are invited to apply.

Canadian innovators working on the next generation of agricultural and food technologies have a new opportunity to bring their ideas to market.

Verdex Capital and XPRIZE Canada Hub have launched the Food & AgTech Innovation Challenge, a competition designed to identify technologies that can help improve productivity, resource efficiency, and resilience throughout the food and agriculture sector.

The challenge includes a $150,000 prize, while selected opportunities may also be considered for up to $1.5 million in follow-on investment, subject to due diligence and investment approval.

The initiative comes at a time when agriculture is increasingly looking to technology to address labour shortages, input costs, sustainability pressures, climate challenges, and the need to produce more food with fewer resources.

According to organizers, the challenge is intended to address a common hurdle facing agricultural innovation: the gap between developing a promising technology and successfully bringing it to market. Research conducted by Verdex Capital found that many food and agricultural technologies struggle to make the transition from development and testing into widespread commercial adoption.

"Some of the most exciting breakthroughs in food and agriculture never make it into the hands of the people who could benefit from them," said Collin Phillip, CEO of Verdex Capital. He said the goal is to find innovations that solve real-world challenges on farms and across the food system while helping entrepreneurs build businesses capable of delivering lasting impact.

"We want to help change that. We're looking for innovations that tackle real challenges on farms and across the food system, and innovators who are ready to take the next step. With the right people, partnerships and capital behind them, those ideas can become businesses that make a lasting difference."

The challenge combines the partner networks and outreach capabilities of XPRIZE Canada Hub with the commercialization, venture creation, and investment expertise of Carrot Ventures. Organizers say the collaboration is designed to help innovators access validation, industry connections, commercialization support, and venture-building resources.

Two Innovation Tracks

The competition will accept applications through two primary tracks.

  • The Food Innovation category focuses on technologies related to food processing, preservation, packaging, food safety, traceability, distribution, waste reduction, and ingredient development.
  • The Produce More with Less category targets technologies that help increase agricultural productivity while reducing resource use. Areas of interest include biological products, animal health solutions, digital agriculture tools, robotics, and automation technologies.

Organizers say submissions will be evaluated based on customer value, measurable benefits, technical differentiation, and their ability to become scalable businesses.

Opportunities for Canadian Agriculture

Although the competition is open to applicants globally, technologies will also be assessed based on their feasibility and applicability within Canadian agriculture and food production systems.

That focus could create opportunities for innovators working on solutions for precision agriculture, livestock management, food processing efficiency, supply-chain traceability, and on-farm automation, all areas receiving increasing attention from producers and agribusinesses seeking to improve competitiveness.

The challenge also reflects growing investment interest in Canada's agri-food innovation ecosystem. Verdex Capital describes itself as Canada's largest private, pure-play agri-food venture capital firm and says its mission is to advance Canadian agriculture by investing in technologies and businesses shaping the future of food and farming.

The firm says it supports companies through investment programs, venture creation initiatives, and strategic partnerships designed to help promising businesses scale more rapidly.

Applications for the Food & AgTech Innovation Challenge will remain open until December 31, 2026, with finalist evaluations and winner announcements planned for January 2027. Further information and the application form are available at carrotventures.com/xprize-challenge.

For Canadian entrepreneurs, researchers, and agtech developers, the challenge could provide not only funding but also access to the industry relationships and commercialization expertise often needed to move innovations from concept to market-ready solutions.
