Canola Crisis and Cattle Threat Shake Global Commodity Markets

Canola Crisis and Cattle Threat Shake Global Commodity Markets

Wet Prairie conditions threaten canola acres, livestock risks rise, markets wobble on currency and tech weakness, and while near-term weather is benign, a hot, dry U.S. summer looms.

The market saw sharp price declines during the week ending June 5, 2026, as investment funds reduced positions and removed risk premiums related to weather and global conditions, according to the latest Ag Commodity Corner+ Podcast titled “Houston, we have a problem with Canola + Screwworm in U S Cattle!

Farms.com Risk Management Commodity Experts Moe Agostino, chief commodity strategist, and Abhinesh Gopal, head of commodity research, began the podcast by discussing canola markets. Despite early gains, commodities like canola and soybeans failed to hold higher levels.

In Canada, canola production is facing serious challenges due to heavy rainfall across major farming regions. While planting progress has improved, excessive moisture has flooded fields, damaging already planted crops and delaying further planting.

Experts estimate up to 10 percent of acres may remain unseeded, with an additional 5 percent lost to flooding. With crop insurance deadlines approaching, farmers may not be able to replant, leading to reduced yields.

Although canola prices were strong earlier, the uncertainty over crop size continues. Farmers are still choosing canola over wheat due to better profits, despite higher input costs like fertilizers.

Another major concern is the detection of New World screwworm in Texas cattle, the first case since 1966. This disease could spread and reduce cattle supply, which is already at historically low levels in the United States. Experts believe this could lead to higher beef prices in the long term.

Currency markets also played a role, with a stronger US dollar and weaker Canadian dollar affecting trade and farm profitability. Economic slowdown in Canada is adding pressure on farmers and markets.

In the stock market, technology shares fell sharply after a parabolic move and a disappointing earnings report from Boardcom as investors rotated to other investments, but experts view this as a temporary correction and a buying opportunity.
