High compliance rates across commodities.

Newly released data from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirms high compliance rates across commodities, as well as domestic and imported food products. The results, drawn from multiple national monitoring programs, highlight the effectiveness of Canada’s science-based regulatory framework in protecting public health and supporting trade.

The National Chemical Residue Monitoring Program Annual Report for 2022-23 indicates CFIA conducted more than 110,000 tests on approximately 15,500 samples, analyzing products such as dairy, fruits and vegetables, honey, eggs, meat, maple products, and seafood.

These tests screened for potential hazards including veterinary drug residues, pesticides, heavy metals, mycotoxins, and other contaminants. Results showed that 97.5 percent of samples were compliant with Canadian safety standards.

This high compliance rate demonstrates that Canadian producers and importers are effectively managing chemical risks in the food supply, helping maintain safe and reliable food products for consumers.

According to the National Microbiological Monitoring Program Annual Report for 2024-25, the CFIA performed 12,641 tests on 5,305 food products sourced from both Canadian and international supply chains. The findings revealed that 99 percent of domestic products were rated satisfactory, while 98.9 percent of imported products met Canadian standards.

Children’s Food Testing Shows Full Compliance
Food safety remains especially critical for vulnerable populations, including infants and young children. The CFIA’s Children’s Food Project (2023) evaluated 105 samples of puréed foods intended for this demographic.

All samples tested for pesticide residues were found to be fully compliant with Canadian standards, providing reassurance to families and caregivers about the safety of products designed for early childhood nutrition.

High compliance rates across Canada’s food supply play a key role in maintaining consumer trust.  Strong regulatory performance supports Canada’s reputation as a reliable trading partner. Demonstrating adherence to strict safety standards helps facilitate international market access and strengthens the competitiveness of Canadian agri-food exports.
