Soil Properties Play a Key Role in Herbicide Performance

Residual herbicides are an important tool for corn producers because they help control weeds before emergence and reduce competition early in the growing season says the team at University Nebraska-Lincoln. Their performance, however, can vary depending on soil conditions and environmental factors.

As farmers know, several factors influence herbicide effectiveness, including soil texture, organic matter levels, moisture, temperature, and rainfall after application. These conditions affect how long herbicides remain available in the soil to control germinating weeds.

One key factor is adsorption, where herbicide molecules bind to clay particles and organic matter. Soils with higher clay content or organic matter typically require higher application rates because more herbicide is tied up in the soil.

Sandy soils with low organic matter bind less herbicide, leaving more active ingredient available for weed control. However, these conditions can also increase the risk of crop injury and herbicide movement through the soil.

Soil pH is another important consideration when selecting residual herbicides. It can influence herbicide availability, persistence, crop safety, and potential effects on future rotational crops.

Products containing atrazine, isoxaflutole, and certain Group 2 herbicides may respond differently depending on soil pH. Higher pH levels can increase herbicide activity and carryover risk, while lower pH levels may reduce weed control effectiveness.

Because soil texture, organic matter, and pH can vary widely between fields, choosing the right herbicide and application rate is critical. Producers should review soil test results and follow product label recommendations to achieve safe and effective weed control in corn.
