CPKC moved slightly more grain last month
Both major railways serving Canadian farmers reported record grain movement for the month of August.
Last month, Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) moved 2.54 million metric tonnes of grain and related products, and 26,051 carloads.
These figures include the first four weeks of the 2026-2027 crop year.
“The new August achievement beat the previous tonnage and carload records set in August 2020,” the railway said in a statement.
In its grain plan for 2026-2027, CPKC forecasts it will supply capacity to transport 34.5 million metric tonnes of Canadian grain.
For the 2025-2026 crop year, CPKC also set a new benchmark for Canadian grain movement.
During the 12-month period, 30.66 million metric tonnes of grain and related goods moved on CPKC lines.
Canadian National (CN) also set an August record.
That railway moved 2.50 million metric tonnes of grain from Western Canada, beating the 2.34 million metric tonnes it moved in August 2020.
“The record movement marks a strong start to the 2026–27 crop year as the harvest progresses across Western Canada and new grain begins moving through the supply chain,” CN said in its statement. “This performance reflects strong customer demand, close collaboration with grain supply chain partners and the consistent execution of CN’s operating plan.”
And in its grain plan, CN says it is expects to move up to 33 million metric tonnes of grain in the 2026-2027 crop year.
