Study warns limited diversity may threaten future corn yield gains

Corn breeders rely on a process known as hybrid vigor, where genetically different parent lines are crossed to create stronger and more productive plants. For decades, this system has helped increase corn yields and improve crop performance.
The study examined two major breeding groups commonly used in corn development. While these groups remain genetically different from each other, researchers discovered that variation within one key group has been declining over time. This reduction is largely linked to years of selecting and reusing the most successful breeding lines.
Scientists analyzed dozens of corn inbred lines representing different maturity levels. Their findings showed that genetic variation related to grain yield was especially low in intermediate-maturity lines, a category widely grown across North America and responsible for a significant share of global corn production.
Researchers warn that continued loss of diversity could make it harder to develop new hybrids capable of meeting future yield goals. Limited genetic resources may also reduce the crop’s ability to adapt to changing weather conditions, emerging diseases, and other agricultural challenges.
The project was supported by a long-running collaboration among corn breeders and researchers across the United States and Canada. The team evaluated more than 160 hybrid combinations grown at over 30 locations to better understand available genetic diversity.
Despite the concern, the researchers emphasized that corn breeding still has a strong future. They found healthy levels of diversity in several other breeding groups and maturity classes. Experts believe introducing new genetic material into breeding programs can help maintain progress and support future crop improvement.
The study highlights the importance of preserving and expanding genetic diversity to ensure corn remains productive, resilient, and capable of meeting global food demands in the years ahead.
