Iowa program helps participants prepare for FAA remote pilot certification

The use of drones in agriculture and other industries continues to grow as technology becomes an important part of modern operations. To help individuals gain the skills needed to operate drones commercially, a specialized training program is being offered for those seeking professional certification.

The Digital Ag Innovation Lab at Iowa State University and Terraplex Ag will host a two-day FAA Part 107 Test Prep Course designed to prepare participants for the Federal Aviation Administration's Remote Pilot exam. Successful completion of the exam allows individuals to earn certification required for commercial drone operations in the United States.

The course will provide participants with both classroom learning and hands-on instruction. Training will focus on key topics that are required for the FAA Part 107 exam, including drone regulations, airspace classifications, flight safety requirements, and operational limitations.

Participants will receive study materials and access to practice exams that are intended to help them understand the testing process and improve their readiness. The training also includes review sessions where attendees can ask questions and strengthen their knowledge before taking the certification exam.

Commercial drone use has expanded rapidly in recent years. Drones are now used in agriculture for crop monitoring, field scouting, mapping, spraying operations, and data collection. They are also widely used in construction, infrastructure inspection, emergency response, and environmental monitoring.

Because of this growing demand, certified remote pilots are becoming increasingly valuable across multiple industries. The FAA Part 107 certification helps ensure that drone operators understand safety standards and federal regulations while conducting commercial operations.

The course will be led by an experienced instructor with a background in both unmanned aircraft systems and agricultural drone operations. Participants will benefit from practical knowledge gained through years of operating drones in professional environments.

In addition to technical instruction, the course offers an opportunity for attendees to connect with others who are interested in drone technology and emerging agricultural innovations. The learning environment is designed to support both beginners and individuals with previous drone experience.

Enrollment is limited, encouraging a more interactive classroom experience. Organizers recommend registering early because available spaces may fill quickly. Registration includes course instruction, training materials, practice tests, review activities, and lunch during the event. The FAA examination fee is separate from course registration costs.

Programs such as this play an important role in introducing new technologies to agricultural communities. By providing access to training and education, these initiatives help farmers, agribusiness professionals, students, and technology enthusiasts better understand how drones can support productivity and decision-making.

The training also highlights the growing importance of workforce development in agriculture. As technology continues to reshape farming practices, educational opportunities that focus on innovation and practical skills are becoming increasingly valuable.

Drone technology is expected to remain a key tool in the future of agriculture. From improving crop management to enhancing operational efficiency, drones offer a wide range of benefits for producers and agricultural businesses. Learning how to operate these systems safely and effectively can create new career opportunities and support industry growth.
