Family dairy farm recognized for breeding excellence and industry leadership
Erbacres Holsteins in Illinois has been named the recipient of the 2026 McKown Master Breeder Award, a prestigious honor recognizing dairy farms that demonstrate excellence in genetics, production, longevity, and breed influence.
The family farm began in 1957 when Kenneth and Pauline Erbsen established a small Holstein operation. Over the decades, the farm grew into a successful registered Holstein herd while remaining family-owned and operated. Today, multiple generations of the Erbsen family continue to play an active role in managing the farm and caring for the cattle.
The operation currently farms around 700 acres and maintains a herd of 100 registered Holsteins. Despite its modest size, the herd has achieved impressive results. The farm has produced hundreds of highly rated cows and earned recognition for consistent breeding performance and milk production.
A key focus of the breeding program has been developing strong type traits, durability, and profitability. This approach has helped the herd achieve long-term success and produce cattle that perform well both in the barn and in the show ring.
Over the years, Erbacres Holsteins has earned numerous championships and breeder awards. The farm has exhibited many successful cattle at state and national events. One of its most celebrated animals achieved top honors at major dairy shows, helping strengthen the farm’s reputation for breeding excellence.
The family has also made significant contributions to the dairy industry through leadership roles, youth programs, cattle judging activities, and breed associations. Their involvement has helped support the next generation of dairy producers and strengthen the Holstein community.
The award recognizes more than breeding success. It honors decades of hard work, dedication, and commitment to agriculture.
