Three inspiring farm dogs compete for the People's Choice Pup award

The People’s Choice Pup award celebrates the dedication and loyalty that farm dogs bring to families and agricultural communities across the United States.  The award is organzied through the American Farm Bureau.

This year’s three finalists—Bubbles, Goose, and Ruby Hope—represent the unique ways dogs support farm work, offer companionship, and inspire those around them. Farms.com has included links within the article for readers to explore every dog in more in-depth detail as well as cast votes.

Bubbles, a five-year-old Border Collie from Montana, is known for her commitment to daily livestock care. She herds sheep from pastures, guides poultry into shelters, and assists with moving animals for veterinary work. Bubbles also works closely with guardian dogs to protect livestock from wildlife, including coyotes and grizzly bears. During lambing season, she alerts her farmer, Elena, when animals need attention and nurtures newborn lambs. Beyond the farm, she serves as a greeter at the greenhouse and helps teach visitors at the Montana State Fair.

Vote for Bubbles

Goose, a twelve-year-old Red Heeler from Kentucky, is admired for his adaptability. Once an active cattle helper, he lost his eyesight due to glaucoma in 2021. Despite challenges, Goose remains a beloved member of the farm, relying on memory and instinct to greet visitors and lift spirits.

His calm personality makes him a favorite at community events. Farmer Lindie calls him “the heart of the farm” because of his loyalty and resilience.

Vote for Goose

Ruby Hope, a three-year-old red fox Lab from Indiana, is a certified service dog and the constant companion of Travis Burkhart, who suffered a serious injury in 2008. After the loss of his previous service dog, Ruby Hope became a joyful and devoted partner.

With support from fellow farmers, Travis now has a track wheelchair, allowing both to explore the farm together. Ruby Hope assists with daily tasks, accompanies him to workouts, and brings emotional support that enriches his life.

Meet Willy: California Farm Bureau’s 2025 Farm Dog of the Year!

We’re excited to introduce Willy, a miniature long-haired dachshund with a big heart and even bigger courage, and the Grand Prize winner of this year’s Farm Dog of the Year Contest!

Willy may be small, but he’s become an indispensable partner on owner Marshal Hagedorn’s forestry and cattle operations in Shasta, Tehama, and Siskiyou counties. Adopted in 2023, he quickly found his place on the ranch, helping manage critters, tagging along for long days in the woods, and offering unwavering companionship during demanding logging work.

Willy has even taken naturally to moving cattle, surprising calves (and more than a few full-grown cows!) with his burst of energy from the tall grass. As Marshal put it: “He goes with me everywhere every single day.”

Congratulations to Willy and his family, a perfect example of how every good farm dog, no matter the size, helps keep California agriculture running strong.
