Higher diesel and fertilizer prices add pressure on farm operations
U.S. farmers are facing higher operating expenses as rising fuel and fertilizer prices increase the cost of crop production and farm transportation.
New data released by members of the Joint Economic Committee shows that diesel prices increased sharply during the spring planting season. The report estimates that farmers across the country spent about $1.4 billion more on diesel fuel planting major crops, including corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, and rice.
According to the findings, the average farmer paid approximately $1,500 more to refill a typical on-farm fuel tank compared to peak costs experienced during the 2025 planting season. Nationwide, the added cost to refill a farm fuel tank reached an average of $1,538.
The higher costs also extend to farm equipment and transportation vehicles. The report found that filling a typical grain truck cost about $205 more, while refueling a typical tractor cost roughly $250 more than previous levels.
State-by-state estimates showed fuel cost increases across the country. California recorded one of the largest increases, while many Midwestern and Eastern states also saw significant jumps in diesel expenses.
Industry concerns extend beyond fuel prices. Supply disruptions affecting global fertilizer markets have also created challenges for producers. Fertilizer remains one of the largest expenses for crop farmers, and higher costs can influence planting decisions and production plans.
A nationwide poll conducted by the American Farm Bureau earlier this year found that many farmers were concerned about fertilizer affordability heading into the spring planting season. The survey reported that 70% of respondents believed fertilizer prices were high enough to limit their purchasing ability.
Farm groups continue to monitor energy markets and input costs as producers evaluate budgets for upcoming growing seasons. Rising expenses for fuel, fertilizer, and transportation remain key concerns for farmers working to maintain profitability while producing food, feed, and fuel for domestic and global markets.
